What You’ll Need to Get Started

You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment to begin—just a few basics:

  • Multi-surface or enamel paints (FolkArt , Americana, or DecoArt are great options)
  • Dotting tools (a six-pack set works well with various sizes)
  • Small paint brushes (you can use the end of the brush handle instead of dotting tools)
  • A flat 1″ paintbrush (to paint the bottom of the base if you choose)
  • A clean wine glass (stemmed or stemless, either is fine!)
  • Rubbing alcohol (to clean and prep the glass)
  • Paper towels (for quick fixes or cleanups)
  • Plastic Palette, mixed media palette paper or even a paper plate will work!

Tip: You can grab most of these supplies at Dollar Stores and the paints you can get at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or on Amazon.

Step 1: Prep Your Glass and Choose Your Colors

Before you start dotting, give your glass a good wipe-down with rubbing alcohol to remove any oils or residue. Pick a color scheme that suits the occasion. In the video, white (for the letter outlines), rose gold, silver, and black were used—but feel free to play with your favorite shades!

Step 2: Dot Your Outline Using Block Letters

Why Block Letters?

While cursive may be pretty, block letters are way easier to work with when you’re doing dot art. They give you clean lines and even spacing—especially important when using a dotting technique.

How to Dot the Outline

  • Dip your dotting tool in paint and press to make a dot.
  • Repeat for each part of the letter (one dot at a time!).
  • Adjust spacing based on the length of the name:
    • Short names (like “Katie”) = bigger letters.
    • Long names (like “Isabella”) = smaller letters.

There is a slight learning curve with the lettering, but don’t fret! Whenever I try a new glass painting technique, I do it on a “practice glass” first, until I get a feel for it. I highly suggest doing this. If you make a mistake? No big deal! Just wipe it off with a paper towel or re-clean the glass with rubbing alcohol and start over. Once you feel comfortable, then you can really get into painting your dot art wine glass!

Step 3: Fill in the Letters with Metallic Colors

Choosing Your Inner Colors

To make the letters really pop, use contrasting colors inside. In this tutorial:

  • Outline = White
  • Inner dots = Rose Gold and Silver
(White wasn’t used inside to avoid blending in with the outline.)

Dotting the Interior

  • Use smaller dotting tools (or even the end of a paintbrush).
  • Be patient and avoid overcrowding.
  • Vary the size of your dots slightly—it adds depth and makes the process quicker.

Step 4: Add Decorative Dots Up the Stem (Optional)

To give the glass a little extra flair, dot upward from the base to the bowl in a trailing pattern. Think of champagne bubbles—bigger at the bottom, smaller as they rise.

  • Start at the base using a larger dotting tool.
  • Let the dots “trail off” upward in a curve or swirl.
  • Use the same color palette as the lettering or mix it up!

Step 5: Finish the Base with Color and Bake It!

Once your top design is dry, paint the underside of the base black for a sleek, finished look. The upper base gets rose gold, silver, and white dots in varying sizes. This step is optional! If you choose to do this, it will need 2 coats minimum and be sure to allow paint to dry completely between coats. You can wipe off the edge of the base with your thumb while the base is still wet.

I LOVE THE BLACK BASE WITH THE CONTRASTING DOTS ON THE TOP! VERY SHARP LOOKING.

Baking instructions:

  • When paint is dry, place glassware on a clean cookie sheet in a COLD OVEN
  • Set the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit (some paints say 325 on the instructions, check your label)
  • Once the oven reaches temp, bake the glasses for 30 minutes
  • Turn oven off and crack the door
  • Let cool completely! Do not remove the glasses until they are totally cooled off. Any sudden change in temperature may cause the glass to crack or break

If you follow along with the video, baking instructions for curing the paint safely at home are usually included in the video description—be sure to check them before using or washing the glass! Some paints claim to be dishwasher-safe once cured onto the glass, but I only hand-wash mine.
