Cow Print Mason Jars: Cute & Easy DIY

Cow print mason jars are one of my absolute favourite DIY glass jar crafts to do! They are so simple to make and the perfect touch for farmhouse decor.

These cute cow mason jars go great with farmhouse decor and make lovely centrepieces for a country-themed party, bridal shower, or barn wedding. I like making these with the large jars (32 oz.) but you can make them any size to suit your needs.

Don’t worry, even if you are not super crafty or artistic, this is one mason jar craft that anyone can pull off!

I will take you through the whole process step-by-step. If you’re more of a visual learner, check out the video tutorial at the end of this post.

Black & White Cow Print Mason Jars Materials

Here is a list of all the supplies you will need to paint your super cute cow mason jar!

Mason Jar
70% Rubbing Alcohol
Pencil
Medium-sized flat paintbrush
Small round tip paintbrush or liner brush
Palette or plastic plate
White Paint (chalk paint, acrylic, or multi-surface)
Black paint (acrylic, multi-surface, or enamel)
Fine grit sandpaper sanding sponge, or block (OPTIONAL)
Mod Podge or other acrylic sealer
Jute cord, twine, or lace ribbon

1. Clean & Prepare The Mason Jar

If you are using a brand-new jar, simply clean the outside of it with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. This is to ensure no fingerprints or oils from your hands are on the jar which helps the paint adhere better to the glass.

If you are upcycling a jar from your pantry be sure to wash it thoroughly in warm soapy water. If the jar has a label, soak it in hot soapy water until the label falls off.

Any residual glue can be removed with Goo-Gone or a mixture of Lemon essential oil and dish soap (I like blue Dawn).

Rinse the jar well and let dry completely.

2. Paint The Jar White

Pour the white paint onto a disposable plastic plate or palette. You don’t need anything fancy here, you can even use the lid from an old margarine tub as a paint palette.

If you choose to use chalk paint and the can is on the small side just dip your paintbrush right in and skip the palette.

Use a medium flat brush for this step, maybe an inch wide or so.
Hold the jar by the rim and paint the body first.
Apply the paint using vertical and horizontal brush strokes.

Don’t worry about this first coat looking perfect or the brushstrokes being visible. As a matter of fact, having some brushstrokes visible on the finished project gives it a rustic look which I actually think looks quite nice!

You can also pounce the paint on with a sponge dobber instead of a paintbrush. This painting technique eliminates brushstrokes and give the jar a textured look.

Do not paint the bottom of the jar yet, this way you can set it on your work surface without making a mess. You paint the bottom at the very end.

Once the body is painted with the first coat, set the jar on the table and paint the rim.
Use a smaller brush for this step to get in the threads of the jar if you like.
Remember, these cow print Mason jars are meant to look rustic so they don’t need to be perfect. Don’t overthink it!

Quick Tip:

If you plan to have a lid on your finished jar apply only a thin coat of paint on the threads at the top otherwise the metal band won’t screw on properly. OR, don’t paint this part at all.

Let the jar dry completely, for a couple of hours or preferably overnight.

Paint a second coat of white using the same process as the first.

At the very end, flip your jar upside down and paint the bottom. Alternatively, you can leave the bottom unpainted, it’s entirely up to you. Artistic license, right??

Let the second coat dry completely.

3. Distress Jar With Sandpaper

If you want your cow Mason jar to have a more rustic or shabby chic look, you can distress the jar by removing some of the paint with fine grit sandpaper or a sanding block.

Simply sand off as little or as much as you want.
Focus on the raised parts of the glass like the lettering, the threads on the neck of the jar, and the bottom edge.
After sanding, wipe down the jar thoroughly with a dry cloth to remove the dust residue.

Draw On Cow Spots With Pencil

Using a light pencil, draw on cow print spots in random places. If you need a little inspiration for the shape of the splotches, just search up cow print pattern on Google or Pinterest and there will be tons you can copy.

Again, remember there is no right or wrong way to paint a cow print shape but I will say, don’t overcrowd your black spots.

Leave enough white (negative) space on your design. If you mess up, just erase it and try again!

Paint The Cow Spots Black

Pour a little black paint onto your palette. For this step, I do not recommend chalk paint. I prefer using high-quality multi-surface acrylic craft paint or enamel paint because I find they are richer and more pigmented.

I love the way Folk Art multisurface paint goes on so that’s what I recommend using.

With a small round paintbrush brush or liner brush, paint over top of the pencil line with black paint. Then fill in the spot.

Take your time and have fun with it. A liner brush works better for this step because it gives you more control over the finer edges and details.

If you feel you need to do a second coat you can but I usually don’t. The black paint covers very well with just one. Allow the jar to dry overnight.

Apply Sealer

To ensure your cow print Mason jar lasts it’s best to seal it. I use a wide flat brush and paint on a thin coat of Modpodge to do this.

Take care around the grooves and the rim as it can get a little goopy in these areas so use a smaller paintbrush. Just be sure you get every area of the jar.

You can also use different types of clearcoat. I really like using this DecoArt Satin Varnish for my projects. You can also use a spray can sealer. If you choose something like polycrylic spray, I recommend a “non-yellowing” Minwax Protective Finish Spray.

Using the same technique as when you painted the white, do the bottom at the very end by placing the jar upside down on your work surface.

Mason Jar Lid

To lid or not to lid, that is the question…the answer is, it’s entirely up to you. If you want to keep it simple, just screw the metal band on the top. If you are using the jar as a piggy bank or a container to hold Christmas candies or something similar, you will need the lid and the band.

You can also choose to paint the lid and the metal band with black paint. Apply 2 coats and seal with clearcoat when dry.

Finishing Touches

Once your cow jar is completely dry, it’s time to make it extra pretty with some finishing touches! I like the simplicity of tying a length of skinny jute cord around the neck of the jar but I have also used burlap and lace ribbon.

At Christmas time, a red or green and red plaid ribbon tied in a bow looks cute and festive.

Hit Pinterest or Etsy for inspiration as to how to finish of your masterpiece. The possibilities are endless! I’ve even seen these cow print Mason jars with a small cowbell tied onto the top, very country-chic.

What is Smush Painting?

Smush painting is a simple yet captivating art technique where children can create beautiful, abstract designs by smushing together various colors of paint.

It’s all about embracing the mess and letting your child’s imagination run wild! Plus, it’s a sensory-rich experience that can be tailored to suit the developmental stage of your little artist, from babies to toddlers and beyond.

Supplies You’ll Need:

Before diving into the colorful world of smush painting, gather these supplies:

Washable Paints: Opt for non-toxic, washable paints that are safe for kids. Brands like Crayola and Melissa & Doug offer a wide range of vibrant colors perfect for smush painting.
Thick Paper, Cardstock or Small Canvas: Choose sturdy paper or cardstock to withstand the smushing process without tearing. When we did this project we used a small canvas from Dollarama. A little canvas board would work great too!
Paintbrushes (Optional): While not essential, paintbrushes can be used to spread paint on the paper before smushing for added texture.
Saran Wrap, Wax/Parchment Paper, or Ziplock Bags: These items will be used to contain the paint and facilitate the smushing process. Choose based on what you have available or what your child prefers.
Wide Painter’s Tape: If using a canvas, you can secure the saran wrap or wax paper to the back of the canvas with wide painter’s tape or masking tape to keep excess paint from oozing out the sides.
Protective Apron or Old Clothes: Smush painting can get messy, so dress your child in clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, or use a protective apron.
Surface Protection: Lay down newspaper, an old tablecloth, or a plastic table cover to protect your work surface from paint spills.
Optional Extras: Glitter, sequins, or other embellishments to add some sparkle to your smush paintings!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Now, let’s get smushing! Follow these simple steps for a colorful adventure:

Prepare Your Work Area: Lay down your protective surface and gather all your supplies within easy reach.
Prepare the Paint: Squeeze small amounts of different colored paints onto your paper or cardstock. Encourage your child to choose their favorite colors or experiment with mixing them together for new shades.
Smush Technique 1: Using Saran Wrap:
- Lay a piece of Saran Wrap over the paint.
- Press down gently on the Saran Wrap, spreading the paint around and creating interesting patterns.
- Carefully peel away the Saran Wrap to reveal your masterpiece!
Smush Technique 2: Using Wax/Parchment Paper:
- Follow the same process as with Saran Wrap, using wax or parchment paper instead.
- Press down gently and peel away to reveal the smushed design.
Smush Technique 3: Using Ziplock Bags:
- Place the paper with paint inside a ziplock bag.
- Seal the bag, ensuring there’s no air inside.
- Encourage your child to smush and squish the paint around inside the bag to create their masterpiece.
Add Embellishments (Optional): Sprinkle glitter or add sequins to the wet paint for extra flair.
Let It Dry: Allow your smush painting to dry completely before displaying or hanging it up for everyone to admire!

How To Paint Wine Glasses: Cheers To DIY Creativity!

Are you tired of using the same old wine glasses every time you host a get-together or enjoy a glass of wine at home? Why not add a personal touch to your glassware and elevate your drinking experience? Or maybe you want to paint and sell glasses to make a little side income. Today I’m going to walk you step-by-step through the fun and creative process of how to paint your own wine glasses with enamel paint. Plus, I’ll share tips on how to properly cure your glassware in the oven and how to care for your hand-painted masterpieces.

Getting Started with Hand-Painting Wine Glasses

First, let’s gather the essentials for your glass painting project.

You’ll need wine glasses (either plain or thrifted), enamel, multisurface, or glass paint, rubbing alcohol, paper towels, paintbrushes, a creative spirit, and an open mind. Don’t worry if you are a total beginner at painting glassware. I myself, am self-taught! This is a skill anyone can learn, you just have to practice and your painting skills will improve in time.

Wine Glasses: You can use plain wine glasses (stemmed or stemless), or get crafty with thrifted glassware. Don’t worry if they’re mismatched; it adds to the charm! You can also pick up glasses at the dollar store, just be sure to inspect the glass for air bubbles or imperfections.
Enamel Paints: FolkArt, DecoArt, and Americana are great options for glass painting. These paints are designed to adhere well to glass and offer a range of vibrant colors. Be sure the label specifies it is to paint on glass. A lot of times, there will be a little wine glass symbol on the top of the cap. Regular acrylic paint will wash off your glasses!
Paintbrushes: Grab some fine-tip brushes for intricate designs and a couple of larger ones for broad strokes. You don’t have to buy super expensive brushes for the most part. I will invest a little more on my liner brush because a quality brush just makes painting fine lines easier.

Step 1: Design & Inspiration

Before you dive into painting, decide on your design. This could be anything from simple abstract patterns to intricate floral motifs.

Be inspired by your favorite colors and themes. Don’t be afraid to sketch out your design on paper first to get a sense of how it will look on the glass.

Simple polka dot or confetti designs are easy to do and a great place for beginner DIY wine glass painting.

Step 2: Clean Your Glassware

Thoroughly clean your wine glasses to ensure the paint adheres well. Use warm, soapy water and a gentle scrub, then rinse and let them air dry. Next, apply 70% rubbing alcohol on a paper towel and clean any residue from the glass. Avoid touching the outside of the glass with your fingers (as best you can) after cleaning to minimize fingerprints.

Step 3: Start Painting

Begin applying your design using the enamel or glass paints. These paints are easy to work with and provide vivid, long-lasting color. Take your time, and remember, it’s okay to make mistakes! You can always wipe off the paint with a damp cloth and start over. If you want to go over parts of your design with a second coat, wait until the first coat is completely dry. If you apply more paint on top of the first coat when it’s still tacky, your paint will start to lift. Practice patience and don’t rush the process!

Also, don’t mix water with enamel/glass paint, just clean your brushes in between colors by wiping on a damp paper towel. Dry your brush well before moving on to the next color. Enamel paint and water don’t really like each other as the paint’s consistency will change.

Step 4: Cure the Paint in the Oven

To make your design last a long time, it’s essential to cure the paint. Whichever brand of paint you are using, read the baking instructions on the label. Here’s how to bake your hand painted wine glasses to make the paint permanent:

I let my glasses air dry for 24 hours before baking. You don’t have to do this but I think it helps the paint set even better.

Inspect the design for any splatters or mistakes. Use acetone nail polish remover on a Q-Tip to remove any mistakes. Be very careful not to touch the acetone to the parts of your design that you want to keep because it is a strong solvent!
Carefully set your wine glasses on a cookie sheet lined with foil or parchment paper.
Put your glasses in a COLD OVEN.
Turn your oven on to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (sometimes it’s 325, always check your paint label!).
Once the oven reaches the desired temperature, set a timer for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, turn off the oven and let it cool completely with the glasses inside. This gradual cooling process helps prevent the glass from cracking.

The first time I put wine glasses in the oven I was so worried that they would crack or shatter! Lol. But, they didn’t! Have faith, as long as you are putting the glassware in the oven when cold and removing them after they are completely cooled, they’ll be fine. Trust the science!

Step 5: Care & Maintenance

Now that your hand-painted wine glasses are ready, it’s essential to take good care of them. Some of the paint manufacturers say that glasses painted with their paint are top-rack dishwasher safe but I always hand wash mine and recommend the same to my customers.

Hand Wash: Avoid using a dishwasher, as it may cause the paint to peel. Gently wash your glasses by hand with mild soap and a soft sponge. Don’t scrub too vigorously and never leave your wine glasses to soak for long periods of time. This will lift the paint and erase all your hard work!
Storage: When not in use, store your hand-painted wine glasses in a safe place, where they won’t get scratched or chipped.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Refrain from using abrasive or harsh cleaning chemicals on your glassware.
Re-Touching: Over time, you might notice some wear and tear. Don’t worry; you can always touch up your design using the same enamel paints.

Now that you know how to hand-paint your wine glasses and ensure the design lasts, it’s time to get creative! Get those artistic juices flowing, perhaps host a wine-glass painting night at your house for friends!
